Western Society of Crop Science

Every year, the Western Society of Crop Science (WSCS) holds a conference that provides a venue for collaboration and networking among crop science professionals and students in the Western Region. It is an excellent opportunity for students to present their research findings and talk with professionals in their area of research/interest.

Lodging Information

Lodging options are available on the University of Alaska-Fairbanks campus as well as at local hotels. Campus options are listed below.

  • Option 1: Traditional "Dorm" room; twin bed, community bathroom shared with the floor, community kitchen, and free laundry.
    • Double room (two people): $75/night
    • Single room (one person): $55/night
  • Option 2:Suite style; houses up to four people, two bedrooms with two twin beds in each, joined by a small sitting room with a toilet room and sink.  Community showers shared with the floor, a community kitchen on each floor, and free laundry.
    • Full suite (four people): $165/night
    • Private suite (one person) single room with 1/2 bathroom: $60/night
  • Option 3:Apartment style; houses up to four people, two bedrooms with two twin beds in each, a kitchen, a living room, and a bathroom.  Rate: $185/night.

Linens (sheets, pillow, blanket, towel, and washcloth) are included.  Also included is a voucher for breakfast at campus dining locations for each day of your stay.

    Position: President-Elect

    • Description: The President-Elect is elected one year prior to succeeding to the Presidency (2-year term) and then to Past-Presidency (2-year term). The role of President-Elect is specifically responsible for arranging the technical program of the WSCS annual meeting, but will assist the rest of the Executive Committee (President-Elect, President, Past-President, and Secretary-Treasurer) with other program planning.

Award: Emerging Scientist Award

  • Description: This award will be given to an outstanding scientist who is 7 years or less into their career (7 years from completion of the terminal degree), who is a member of WSCS, and who has made significant contributions to the scientific profession with notable impacts to agricultural industries.

2025 WSCS Annual Conference

June 24-25, 2025 | Walla Walla, WA

The Western Society of Crop Science (WSCS) Conference was held in Walla Walla, WA from June 24-25, 2025 and provided an opportunity to network with colleagues and students from around the West and exchange scientific information. The meeting agenda included professional and student oral and poster presentations focused on crop research in the western US. The field tour included a Seven Hills Vineyard tour, McKinney Farms tour, and a Palouse Region Ice Age Floods Soils tour. The meeting ended with a banquet the evening of July 18th. Congratulations to Dr. Anish Sapkota, winner of the 2025 Emerging Scientist Award.

CSUMB

July 17-18, 2024 | California State University, Monterey Bay

The Western Society of Crop Science (WSCS) was held in Monterey Bay, CA from July 17-18, 2024 and provided an opportunity to network with colleagues and students from around the West and exchange scientific information. The meeting agenda included professional and student oral and poster presentations focused on crop research in the western US. A field tour to the world famous Salinas Valley included visits to large farms producing a wide variety of cool-season vegetables. The tour also included a demonstration of automated weeding technology being used in the region. The meeting ended with a banquet the evening of July 18th.
